Between Kristina Holey’s practice and my experience with customers, we’ve seen a major surge of inflammatory conditions like acne, rosacea and dermatitis over the last few years. In fact, it’s reached epidemic proportions in Kristina’s female clients in their 30s and 40s.

There is no denying that climate change affects every aspect of our lives—even skin care. At some point in the upward trajectory of levels of heat, pollution and UV emissions, protective skin care will transition from a cosmetic option to a health necessity. And because we aren’t used to thinking of skin care in that way, it will be a non-trivial leap.

We are diehard enthusiasts for the benefits of vitamins A+C on skin health. Decades of academic research supports their efficacy and safety—administered properly, their positive effects are unmatched, especially when used together. Our skin and our systems need appropriate amounts of both of these vitamins to function, so we generally suggest a combination of topical and internal supplementation and diet.

Nothing’s more exasperating than conspicuous breakouts. We all get them, and we all spend a lot of effort trying to avoid them. A daily diet of topical antibiotics and antimicrobials prescribed to combat acne may work for a time, but ultimately, they can disrupt the skin’s microbiome balance. It’s now common knowledge that prolonged use of antibiotics kills off beneficial bacteria found in the gut microbiome, tipping the balance in favor of over-colonization by disease-causing pathogens. Similar to the gut’s microbial disruption-disease cycle, skin microbial dysbiosis can lead to skin problems ranging from redness, irritation, rosacea, rashes, eczema, resurgence of acne and adult acne to photosensitization.

Having a glowing complexion is a wonderful thing! However, it’s important to realize that while beauty may be your primary motivator for adopting smart skin care practices, the reasons to take care of your skin go far beyond looking good. As part of our ongoing series of articles with basic information about the skin, in this post we’ll go over some of the reasons taking good care of it is critical to overall wellness.

Marie Veronique products are designed to repair, restore, and protect the skin from unavoidable stressors in the environment that everyone experiences. In LA, that typically includes photodamage (damage from the sun and other sources of UV light), arid climate, and pollution.

We are leaning more about the skin microbiome every day but it’s a relatively new field of investigation compared to that of the gut microbiome, which explains why, to date, much more has been written about the gut microbiome, with the skin running far behind in second place. In lieu of studies directly involving the skin microbiome some researchers have made assumptions based on gut research and applied them to the skin microbiome as it contributes to skin function. Rather than taking that approach I suggest it would be more helpful to examine the skin microbiome in its own right, starting with a few basic facts.

To select a safe and healthy sunscreen, scrutinize sunscreen ingredients, not SPF numbers. Physical sunblocks offer UVB protection equivalent to chemical sunscreens and superior protection against UVA rays and beyond. Some chemicals in sunscreens can be toxic to reproductive systems, cause allergic reactions and accelerate skin aging.

At Marie Veronique, we consider product formulation as a way to problem-solve. We're always watching the industry, noting trends in the treatment room, as well as at-home skin care. In recent years we’ve noticed an increase in clients who are experiencing symptoms related to heat in the skin, including redness, discoloration, and flushing.
This motivated us to think about all the ways we encounter heat on a regular basis and what to do when it impacts skin health. We’re so pleased to introduce our latest product, FACE TO CHEST HYDRATION MASK.

Our working philosophy has always been to identify a need for products that the marketplace is not currently addressing, and to fill that gap. Our R&D team is always striving to create skincare’s Holy Grail—a topical that is safe, effective, and rooted in the latest science that visibly delays aging and extends the lifespan of skin. And that’s exactly what they achieved with All Day Age-Delay Emulsion.

Over the years we’ve had countless women shopping for the men in their lives (and even the occasional man) inquire about which of our regimens are best suited to male skin. It seems that men’s skin care options remain limited to chemical-laden products and higher-end products with questionable efficaciousness. Somewhere between a lack of products designed to fit into a man’s lifestyle and an absence of education around men’s skin health, most men either don’t know—or think they’re not supposed to care—about their skin.

Consumers have had a considerable impact on the food industry by demanding more organic, natural, sustainable and local options. And since consumers have turned their attention to the cosmetics and skin care industry, demanding better accountability and more stringent safety standards, we’ve seen real progress when it comes to cleaning up our cosmetics and body care products, especially in the last decade.

Warmer days and brilliant bouquets are around the corner. But for allergy sufferers, springtime is no picnic. Those joyful transitions can also translate into an annual ritual of sneezing, sniffling and itchy skin. The first step toward relief is to identify your position on the rash spectrum and to remember that pollen in the air is only one factor in the skin irritation equation.

As the subject of how best to protect yourself from the sun grows ever more complicated, advice from all quarters grows shriller and ever more conflicting. Now we have after-sun damage to ponder, and Professor Niehls Jorgensen, author of a new Danish study suggesting a link between exposure to an enormous number of chemicals in plastics and low sperm counts, advises men not to wear sunscreen at all.
Sun protection is a complicated business, and it’s little wonder consumers are confused, fed up or just plain bored with the whole subject. But sun protection is important. Melanoma (the most deadly form of skin cancer) rates are skyrocketing, and simply put, wearing sunscreen can save lives. However, it can’t be just any old sunscreen. In fact, most sunscreens are worse than useless, as the EWG points out.

All acne, whether adult acne or teenage acne (acne vulgaris), begins when excess sebum clogs pores. This means acne starts deep down in the follicle, below the reach of anti-acne cleansers, masks and lotions.
Since a pound of prevention is worth an ounce of cure, using oils rich in omega-3 and -6 essential fatty acids is a very effective way to treat acne. Rather than stripping the skin of surface oils, omega-3 and -6 facilitate deep penetration to dissolve congestion and prevent the formation of comedos (blackheads). You can also head off comedo formation by supplementing with pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), by using salicylic acid washes and masks to unclog pores (as long as you aren’t allergic) and by using a topical retinol/retinoid product.

The turn of the season is a great time to assess your skin’s overall level of health. Much like changes in the weather, changes in the skin are your body's way of guiding you to figure out how to better support yourself as the days grow shorter. In this post, we clarify what “barrier function” actually means, how it works, and what you can do to not only support it, but actually improve it. Because here’s the thing – if you don’t have healthy barrier function, you don’t have healthy skin. Period. It won’t function well, and it certainly won’t look good.

While skin functionality doesn't change throughout its lifespan, the efficiency with which it performs its many routine tasks certainly does. Your skin is on a biological time clock, and what you do today can have a meaningful impact on its health and longevity tomorrow.

Sunscreen has been around for millennia. Starting with the days when people smeared sheep’s tallow on their skin to protect it from harsh winds and brutal sun, to the more recent oxybenzone-based sunscreens we now know damage both our skin and the well-being of our planet. Skincare science has advanced significantly since then—enough to show us that conventional sunscreens that protect from UV rays during the daylight hours are simply not enough. We need comprehensive round-the-clock protection against all the different assaults on DNA that negatively impact skin’s health and integrity. In addition, let’s go back to what inspired people to use sheep tallow in the first place—a desire for glowing, supple, youthful-looking skin. These days, a good sunscreen should provide more than just sun protection. It should protect skin from all sources of light damage and major hallmarks of aging.

Epigenetics and senomorphics explore how longevity skin care is advancing beyond the traditional mainstays of a skincare regimen toward the active modulation of cellular aging. Recent epigenetic research shows that the majority of skin aging is driven not by genetics but by how genes are expressed over time, and that these processes are profoundly influenced by topical supplements and lifestyle choices. Our newly reformulated Vitamins C+E+Ferulic Serum builds on this science by combining proven antioxidants with new senomorphic actives.

We receive countless inquiries from customers about the side effects that can occur alongside the use of Accutane. It can be very hard on the skin! In general, we do not promote heavy exfoliation or peeling of the skin; instead of looking at the short term results of exfoliation, which can have a brightening effect, we focus on nourishing and promoting a strong barrier layer. As we’ve written about many times before, your barrier layer works hard to keep you healthy, so it is important not to compromise it.

Pregnancy and postpartum is a time of profound change within the body, and that certainly is true for skin function. Changes during this time are common, whether skin becomes symptomatic for the first time, underlying skin symptoms surface, or, more positively, the coveted ‘pregnancy glow’ reveals itself. We often hear from clients that they’re unsure, confused, and sometimes even fearful of skin symptoms arising during pregnancy and postpartum, especially if they’ve had issues in the past. We want to help alleviate that fear.
